WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Dave Weldon, from Florida, is leading the effort to hold the Influenza Vaccine Program Hearing in the Labor HHS Appropriations Subcommittee Tuesday. “There is continued concern in the general population about mercury-containing flu vaccines, and there is new research in the scientific community indicating that mercury in these vaccines may not be as benign as many have assumed,” said Weldon. “We know that mercury is toxic. We even know that thimerosal at some level is toxic. Common sense says we should completely remove this neurotoxin from childhood vaccines during the first few years of their life,” Weldon added. Over the years a number of assumptions about thimerosal have been made, but these assumptions may not be completely correct. Thimerosal may be more harmful to developing babies and young children than originally thought. While it has been added to vaccines for decades, very little research has been done to understand what happens to thimerosal (the mercury-based vaccine preservative) once it has been injected into children.
